This week, we have a new on-going feature at Whale Hunting: interviews with authors about their forthcoming books. There's no more perfect book for us to start with than the explosive, new work of Dutch journalist David de Jong.

He spent four years digging into this book despite across-the-board reluctance of sources in Germany and skepticism over the value of his project. He beautifully explains how his own family's history helped drive him on this journey. We highly recommend you [buy a copy](https://amzn.to/3M8lO8i?ref=whalehunting.projectbrazen.com).

## We need your help with a non-profit project we started at the beginning of the Russian war on Ukraine. It's called [#UkraineVoiceNotes](http://www.ukrainevoicenotes.com/?ref=whalehunting.projectbrazen.com)

We're paying journalists on the ground to capture short videos of everyday people whose lives were upended and changed by conflict. The result is a remarkable tapestry of human stories and drama, something important for history but also to show the hidden side of what's happening to people across all of Ukraine. This isn't a hugely expensive operation, but we want to expand the project to include more voices from more places in the country.

Please make a contribution to support journalists collecting these across the country here. Get in touch if you have any questions or want to provide assistance in another way.

This is the *thirty-first* edition of **WHALE HUNTING**, a newsletter delving into the secret worlds of money and power that ****[we](https://whalehunting.projectbrazen.com/about/)** became obsessed with during our multi-year investigation into the globe-sprawling 1MDB scandal. That project changed our entire worldview. We wrote a ****[book](https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/bradley-hope/billion-dollar-whale/9780316436472/?ref=whalehunting.projectbrazen.com)** about it. We were long-time reporters for the *Wall Street Journal* before setting off on our own last year to create **[**Project Brazen](http://www.projectbrazen.com/?ref=whalehunting.projectbrazen.com)**, a journalism studio and production company. We're creating books, podcasts and documentaries, and we'll share behind-the-scenes insights into the characters and stories we find along the way.
